yes!! japan’s attempt to commit cultural genocide in korea and china also included forcing people to take on japanese names. and idk if this happened in korea, but at least in occupied china, my grandparents’ schools in jinan, shandong were completely re-replaced with schools run by japanese teachers in order to “re-educate” children into speaking japanese more and “becoming citizens of the empire” or whatever (although they would always be second class citizens to the “pure japanese”).

there’s also the massacre after the great kanto earthquake… a rumor came up that koreans were taking advantage of the devastation of the earthquake to commit crimes. this resulted in angry mobs searching to kill koreans by asking random people to pronounce the shibboleth “ばびぶべぼ” (it was believed that koreans couldn’t pronounce it and would instead say “ぱぴぷぺぽ”). as a result, literally thousands of koreans and anyone who couldn’t prounouce the shibboleth correctly (including chinese, okinawans, and japanese people with lisps/odd pronunciations/who spoke other dialects) were murdered as a result of anti-korean sentiment, and language was used as the main means to do so
